Located roughly 15 kilometers from Mussoorie on the Yamunotri Road, Kempty Falls is arguably the most famous and highly visited waterfall in Uttarakhand. Dropping from a height of about 40 feet, the water dramatically splits into five distinct streams before pooling at the bottom. Surrounded by high mountain cliffs and lush greenery, it offers a refreshing escape and a perfect picnic spot for families, friends, and solo travelers alike.

Mussoorie's Majestic and Refreshing Cascade
History and Origins
Name Origins
The peculiar name 'Kempty' is a derivation from the English phrase "Camp-tea". During the British Raj, British officers used to frequently host elaborate tea parties here, hence the area became known as the 'Camp-tea' spot.
British Discovery
The falls were essentially developed as a tourist destination by a British officer named John Mekinan around 1835. He was enchanted by the beauty of the cascade and initiated efforts to make it accessible to the European elite settling in Mussoorie.
Modern Evolution
Over the decades, Kempty Falls has evolved from an exclusive colonial picnic spot to a massively popular public attraction. Today, the area around the base is highly developed with changing rooms, eateries, and souvenir shops.
The Cascade Experience
The beauty of Kempty Falls lies in its terraced formation. The water, sourced from a stream further up the mountains, falls over several rocky steps, finally plunging into a wide, shallow pool. The sound of crashing water echoing against the enclosing hills creates an immensely vibrant and energetic atmosphere.
Things to Do and See
Bathing in the Pool
The primary attraction here is taking a dip in the cool, refreshing water pool at the base of the falls. Changing rooms are available nearby on rent, making it convenient for visitors to enjoy the water.
The Ropeway Ride
For those who prefer not to walk down the steep stairs to the falls, a convenient and scenic ropeway (cable car) operates from the road level directly to the falls, offering a fantastic aerial view.
Photography and Picnicking
The tiered rocks and misty water make for excellent photography. While the immediate base is crowded, slightly higher terraces offer great spots for a relaxed picnic.
